dreaming about a vacationOne of the questions I hear all the time is, “How far in advance should I book my vacation?”Unfortunately, there isn’t one perfect answer! The ideal booking window depends on where you’re going, when you’re traveling, and what is most important to you. But in most cases, planning earlier gives you more choices, more time to prepare, and a better chance of getting the vacation you really want.

For many vacations, I recommend starting the planning process 6 to 12 months in advance. This is a great window for Walt Disney World vacations, all-inclusive resorts, and popular domestic destinations. Booking early usually means a better selection of resort rooms, cruise cabins, and travel dates. It can also make budgeting for your vacation easier. When your trip is booked well in advance, you can make smaller payments over time rather than coming up with a large amount of money all at once as your vacation approaches.

For cruises, planning even farther ahead can be beneficial. Cruise lines often release itineraries 12 to 24 months or more in advance, and booking early can be especially important if you want a particular ship, cabin category, or itinerary. Prices also tend to increase as inventory decreases, so waiting for a last-minute deal doesn’t always work in your favor. This is especially true with Disney Cruise Line, which very seldom offers broad promotions or discounts. Alaska, Europe, holiday sailings, and cruises during school breaks are also popular, so getting your cabin secured early can give you both a better selection and potentially a better price.

If you’re dreaming about Europe or another big bucket-list vacation, I generally recommend beginning the conversation around 9 to 12 months ahead, and sometimes earlier. These trips tend to have more moving pieces, such as airfare, hotels, tours, transfers, rail travel, and excursions. Having extra planning time allows us to put those pieces together thoughtfully instead of simply choosing from whatever is still available.

Your travel dates matter just as much as your destination. Spring Break, summer vacation, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other holidays are some of the busiest times to travel. The same is true for special events and popular seasonal experiences. If you’re limited to specific dates, have a larger family, or have your heart set on a particular resort or experience, I always recommend starting sooner rather than later. As availability becomes more limited, not only can prices rise, but the room, cabin, or experience you really wanted may no longer be available.

Does that mean you can’t plan a great vacation at the last minute? Absolutely not! Sometimes a spontaneous getaway is exactly what you need, and there can still be wonderful options available. The difference is that you may need to be more flexible about your destination, resort, room type, cruise cabin, or travel dates. Last-minute travel is usually easiest when you’re willing to let availability help determine the adventure.

One of the biggest misconceptions about booking early is that you might miss a better deal later. In many cases, booking early doesn’t mean we stop looking. Depending on the supplier and the terms of your reservation, a new promotion may be able to be applied after you’ve booked. That’s one of the things I watch for with my clients. Meanwhile, you already have your vacation secured, you’ve had extra time to spread out the cost, and you can start looking forward to your trip!

So, when should you start planning? Earlier than you think! You don’t need to have every detail figured out before reaching out. In fact, helping you sort through those decisions is part of my job. Even if your vacation is still a year or more away, we can start talking about your ideas, your budget, and what matters most to you. A little planning today can make your future vacation a whole lot easier…and dreaming about it is half the fun!
